Where does the polarization come from?

Brad DeLong:

I look at the policies Barack Obama has tried to pursue, and I see:

  • Mitt Romney’s 2006-vintage health-care policy.
  • George H.W. Bush’s 1990-vintage foreign policy.
  • John McCain’s 2008-vintage global-warming policy.
  • Bill Clinton’s 1998-vintage tax policy
  • Ronald Reagan’s 1982-vintage fiscal-stimulus-in-recession policy.

These aren’t large policy gulfs [with respect to traditional Republican positions].

So where, then, does the polarization come from?
