[The left] should be offering solutions to uncertainty – a stronger better social safety net and a job guarantee. We should also be offering people real control over their lives – and not control exercised on their behalf by the sort of elites they profess to despise.

I’ll wager that’s not how most people perceive The Left and that’s by no means true of all who lean left but it’s a (the?) motivating factor for many of us. One area where I share some common ground with conservatives (NB: actual conservatives, not right-wing ideologue assholes) is in my distrust of the “Free Market”.
